Find a Sponsor

There are various ways in which a golfer who wants to play in The Ultimate Game at The PGA West Stadium Course (the “Tournament”) may be able to arrange sponsorship of his or her participation in the Tournament. The following steps outline one way to do so that has been used by others in the past.

1. Familiarize yourself with the format and financial terms of the Tournament as outlined on the Event Format page so that you are able to explain the format and financial terms in a succinct and well-organized manner.

2. Explain the Tournament format and financial terms and provide a copy of the Event Format to friends, colleagues, and acquaintances, and ask for help in finding a person (the “Organizer”) who is willing to organize a group of sponsors who will share the cost of entry and any winnings. For example: five sponsors at $10,000 each, ten sponsors at $5,000 each, or twenty-five sponsors at $2,000 each.

3. After reviewing the Event Format with the Organizer, propose the following basic financial terms: (a) the sponsors pay the player’s entry fee and expenses (travel and lodging) to enter the tournament; (b) all winnings from the Tournament earned by the player go to the sponsors until they have recovered all of their money; (c) any remaining winnings are split ____% to the sponsors and ____% to the player; (d) all entry fee payments made by the sponsors are held in escrow for the benefit of the sponsors until the Tournament is completed, and all winnings earned by the player are paid by BSMP to the sponsors, who pay the player his or her share.

4. Suggest that the Organizer create a simple sponsorship entity in one of the following ways: (a) the Organizer (or his attorney) can draft a very short and simple written “partnership” agreement among the sponsors setting forth in plain language the economic terms between them; or (b) the Organizer can have an attorney form a limited liability company and a very short and simple “operating agreement” setting forth the economic terms between the sponsors. Any business attorney should be able to do this very quickly and inexpensively. If the Organizer wants a recommendation of an attorney, we will be happy to provide one, but most Organizers in the past have wanted to use an attorney they were already familiar with, and the attorney who puts the sponsorship entity together will be representing solely the sponsors. The economic terms between and among the sponsors are typically very simple: everyone puts in the same amount of money, and everyone shares the same amount of winnings. Sometimes, the sponsors agree that the Organizer should receive a small fee for organizing the sponsorship group. The sponsors should agree that the Organizer has the authority to act on behalf of the sponsorship entity.

5. The sponsorship entity should then enter into a simple written agreement with the player setting forth the terms of the deal agreed to with the player as noted in paragraph 3, above.

6. The sponsorship entity will then enter into the standard form “Sponsorship Agreement” with BSMP, the player will enter into the standard form “Participation Agreement” with BSMP.

7. If at any time in this process, you would like a recommendation of an attorney who could help you with this process, please let us know, and we will be pleased to make such a recommendation, but if you already know an attorney who can help you, that would most likely result in faster, easier, and less expensive representation. You might ask the attorney to do any legal work necessary in return for a share of your winnings as a form of a “contingent fee.”
